Translation guide for the West Balkans DLC

#1 Post by krmarci » 04 Jan 2023 14:11

Hi!
As I did last time with the Heart of Russia DLC, I intend to help out with the Hungarian translations of city names in the West Balkans DLC as well.

A summary of the general rules to be used:
* Slovenia: any cities that might have a unique Hungarian name are unlikely to be included
* Croatia: most cities have a unique Hungarian name
* Serbia: in the northern part, most cities have a unique name; south of Belgrade, names are transliterated using Gaj's Latin Alphabet
* Montenegro: names are transliterated using Gaj's Latin Alphabet
* Bosnia-Herzegovina: names are spelled using Gaj's Latin Alphabet, with some cities having unique Hungarian names
* North Macedonia: names are transliterated using Macedonian-specific transliteration rules
* Albania: it's complicated. Hungarian Wikipedia follows the international practice, using indefinite forms for masculine names, and definite forms for feminine names. See here in Hungarian. I would suggest following SCS' approach with the exception of Tirana (which should remain Tirana).
* Kosovo: it's complicated due to the issue of Serbian-Albanian bilinguality and we will have to see SCS's approach on naming them. Hungarian Wikipedia uses the Albanian names, with the exception of the capital (which becomes Pristina).

Based on the Truck Simulator Wiki, these cities will be included in the DLC:
  • Banja Luka (BA) --> Banja Luka (historically Orbászvár)
  • Belgrade (RS) --> Belgrád (historically Nándorfehérvár)
  • Bihać (BA) --> Bihács
  • Bitola (MK) --> Bitola
  • Durrës (AL) --> follow SCS' approach
  • Ljubljana (SI) --> Ljubljana
  • Maribor (SI) --> Maribor
  • Mostar (BA) --> Mostar
  • Nikšić (ME) --> Nikšić
  • Pristina (XK) --> Pristina
  • Podgorica (ME) --> Podgorica
  • Rijeka (HR) --> Fiume
  • Sarajevo (BA) --> Szarajevó
  • Skopje (MK) --> Szkopje
  • Split (HR) --> Split (historically Spalató)
  • Tirana (AL) --> Tirana
  • Tuzla (BA) --> Tuzla (historically Só)
  • Vlorë (AL) --> follow SCS' approach
  • Zadar (HR) --> Zára (semi-historical, similarly to Brno-->Brünn, and Wrocław-->Boroszló)
  • Zagreb (HR) --> Zágráb
  • Zenica (BA) --> Zenica
