No matter where you are or where the sun sets, during one cycle (a month roughly) the moon will always be fully lit, fully dark, lit from the right and lit from the left once.

the only difference is between northern and southern hemisphere (rotated 180°) and this shouldnt be a problem at all for a game set entirely in the northern hemisphere

Only Northern and Southern hemisphere matter indeed, and even then the moon will go thru all 4 phases. So it still doesnt matter where you are in the end.

It litterally has nothing to do with the suns rays on earth, only about earth blocking the moon from receiving them.

no its not, what you see is the lit surface of the moon by the sun just like the lit surface on earth, so you see "daytime" on the moon, the shadow of the earth is only "visible" during a lunare eclipse

My explination might have not been 100% right but in the end the moon on the picture from the mod is lit correctly.
