Free weekend on Steam

#1 Post by velles » 07 May 2023 07:09

What if SCS did a free weekend on Steam for ATS (and maybe ETS2 as well, of course after release of California Phase 3 and Switzerland - in order to give base game map a better grasp of current DLC quality).
Would it help to bring some new players? Some games (like Paradox grand strategies for example) do these kind of events quite often (combined with a sale) in order to find a new audience.

Pretty sure people at Scs would need weekend off like any other business would do. Sure it would be interesting to see ( even tho some streams it's just lets play.) and Ik sometimes you see blogs on weekends but alot of people at scs are at home spending with family or recharging for next weekday. so i don't think another job on a weekend is a good idea.

Uhhh... What?
OP is talking about free game available for a weekend. A normal although rare occurrence on steam. Nothing more.

@Aziz OH! I thought OP was talking about scs streaming on weekends. My apologize on that part.

Anyway, Actually idk about that. Maybe on the day it was released I can see that as a anniversary day I can see it happen.

Free weekend has been done before. It was back in 2019 when Utah released. So its not a new thought. https://blog.scssoft.com/2019/11/utah-released.html. I believe free weekend simply means you get more than just what the demo offers to try the game out. Its a way to get more people interested.

The topic was discussed here a few times though in which several people commented.

A free weekend that coincided with an anniversary, or state release might be a good PR move. But at $4.99 (going rate I've seen for the base game a number of times, the price I bought the base game for) I'm not sure price is what's preventing more users.

Following steam sales when I bought the game and states (I bought everything prior to Colorado on sale). I spent something in the neighborhood of $85-90. That included some add on packs like cargos, paint packs, etc.

ATS and ETS2 are around £5 or $6 when on sale, and ETS2 already has nearly 500,000 overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.

If people aren't prepared to spend £5 on a game that everybody is already raving about, i don't think a free weekend will make them buy it.

Free weekend is a complete waste of time imo.

Free is free though. You can’t get cheaper than free for full access. Trailer, cargo packs, tuning packs, tire packs and accessory packs are also free but you can’t get everyone buying those either and they are $4.99 or less.

Free weekend can indeed serve a purpose. The game is not so limited anymore compared to 2016 when ATS released.

Free weekends are without (paid) DLCs, so it would be only California, Nevada and Arizona. That's why I think it should be after the California phase 3, so the base game map had more current DLC quality areas.
SCS games have most of the features as a base game so that would probably give people some grasp of the game anyway. TBH I missed that 2019 free weekend and had no idea there was already a one (maybe I would've bought ATS earlier because I didn't have it back then).
Still, it was 4 years ago so quite a long time ago, maybe SCS could do another one.
