I am going to post it on here as well, since there were no responses to my question on the "Your average fuel economy in ATS" thread.

I have a question that I thought was relevant to this topic, so I didn't want to create a new one. When did tyres start affecting fuel mileage? I had been using Galimim's tyre mod forever. I wanted to try Smarty's wheel pack — I don't know why I hadn't used it before given how popular it is, but I love it — and I've noticed that my fuel mileage has improved, not drastically, but definitely noticeably. I use an app called Fuelio to calculate my mpg between fuel stops. I used to get the high 6s and low 7s with my VNL 2018 860. I haven't changed the engine, transmission or cruise speed. I just finished a load from Galveston, TX to Lewistown, MT. I fuelled up somewhere in Kansas, then again in Lewistown after delivering, and got 7.54. I even got 8's in the previous delivery. I reset my trip info every four weeks in-game, so I haven't tested it out like that yet, but I've noticed that the decimal doesn't constantly go up and down, especially when starting and stopping at traffic lights, etc. I don't think it is a placebo effect, so enlighten me!

In my original post, I forgot to mention that it used to shifts to 12th gear at around 59 mph, but now it does so at 61 mph. This is one of the things I noticed had changed, despite not having changed anything except the rims and tyres. Lastly, I haven't driven in the game for four weeks because I haven't had enough time to play lately. However, as of the second week, I am still achieving better MPG.

I'm not familiar with Galimim's tire mod, is it just tires for the vanilla SCS wheels? The SCS wheels are smaller diameter than Smarty's, which would mean that Smarty's wheels and tires would give you a higher final drive ratio, resulting in more MPGs, at least in theory. I don't know if this is the correct answer, but its all I have.

@dwram72 Yes, Galimm's mod doesn't have any wheels; only tyres for the SCS wheels. I think your theory is correct, because I just finished my 'experiment' and drove 11,000 miles in four weeks in-game. I achieved 7.7 mpg, which I've never had before. Normally, I would get 7.1. I pull heavy loads too; I usually gross at 76–78 k. I also figured out why my speed changed in 12th gear: I had put 24.5" wheels on my drive and trailer and didn't notice it. My steers are 22.5". I changed them back to 22.5", and now my speed is back to normal.

However, I haven't tested different brands or tyre sizes yet. I just use Michelin 11R tyres everywhere. So I don't know how affective that is.

Tweaking (drive) wheel diameter works exactly the same way as tweaking transmission final drive ratio. Bigger wheels = lower diff. ratio, thus resulting in both higher speed and better consumption. I proven it (for myself) years ago while driving Soviet military trucks in ETS2 with huge offroad wheels.

However the problem ingame is that it doesn't re-count the weight of those wheels (wheel mass is fixed in the physics.sii file, being 70 kg AFAIR). The bigger ones are usually heavier IRL meaning the engine requires higher output to spin them. For instance my little personal car usually gets better consumption on smaller wheels due to them being lightweight and easier to spin - this factor gets primary on real cars (and trucks I suppose) in most cases where the wheels are of the same type differing with the size only.
