Wheel FFB-settings for ATS/ETS2

#1 Post by R0adrunner » 27 Oct 2017 21:25

Thought it might be useful to dedicate a thread to suggested FFB-settings for different wheels. Especially for people that are new to these sims and maybe even for the seasoned virtual truckers that are moving to a new controller. Here's the settings i use for my Fanatec CSW V2 wheelbase with CSP V3 pedals. Included are my ingame FFB settings as well.

It should go without mentioning that these settings shouldn't be thought of as the universal truth, but rather as a baseline from where you can go ahead and tune in the settings to your own preferences.

Be aware that i use a 350mm diameter wheel rim, so if you use a smaller diameter rim, you might want to bring down the FF either on the wheelbase or alternatively bring down the force feedback gain setting ingame.

Hopefully i won't be violating any forum rules, but i'm posting this on the ATS forum as well.

Without further ado, here's my settings. Feel free to reply with your own wheel settings :)

CSW V2 wheelbase (driver v2.92, firmware v3.16):

SEN - Aut (wheel angle set at 900 degrees in driver settings)
FF - 100
SHO - Off
ABS - 30
DRI - Off
FOR - 100
SPR - 100
DPR - Off
BRF - 50

I'm curious, why do you have the damper off on both the wheel and in game?

I'm curious because there have been so many discussions about people saying that the wheel's spring and damper settings should be set to ZERO and only use in-game's settings. Their reasoning was that 100% on the wheel will already provide spring and dampering effects, and in game settings will add to that 100%.

It doesn't make sense to me because from what I understand, 100% spring and damper on the wheel's setting will allow the games to use 100% of the spring and damper effects that the wheel provides. Doesn't mean the game will use 100% of it. Many forum posts later and I still have no idea which is correct. Perhaps it depends on the game but I believe my understanding is correct since you will not feel any effects, including spring and dampering, when you disable in game FFB and have the game in driving mode.

It's an interesting topic and i'm glad you brought it up. Honestly i had forgot all about this post. Funny enough, just a few days ago i thought about starting a topic about force feedback in ATS/ETS2 in general :)

I have no scientific formulas to prove it, but my from my experience (with my Fanatec CSW V2) what you said about adjustments ingame vs wheel makes total sense to me; 0 is 0 and 100 is 100 whether you adjust it ingame or at the wheel and they do not double up IMO.

I checked my FFB settings now both on the wheel and in game and they were about the same as before including no damper. I played around with the damper settings for a bit and from what i can tell turning up the damper introduces a bit of detail from the road surface which is generally a good thing. The downside however was IME/IMO that curbs, railroad tracks and such gets ridiculously excessive and felt canned. I ended up leaving the damper on both wheel and ingame at 50% for now.

It would be great if SCS did an overhaul on the FFB at some point. Would be nice to have some more detail from the road surface and on top of that good detail from the trucks suspension, steering rack etc. The centering of the steering and engine vibration settings feels on par, but overall the FFB could be so much better and take the driving experience to a whole new level.

Everything IME/IMHO/YMMV and all that of course :D

Thanks for the insight. I do agree that too much damper/spring effects can ruin the feel. I personally do run at 30% SPR and 50% DPR on the wheels. Haven't touched the game's damper setting. And yes, I do agree that the game needs improved FFB. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will make a plugin like supric's for Fanatec one day in the future if SCS is never going to improve the FFB.
