Re: Kansas Discussion Thread
I think one of the points of the blog was to give images that are really difficult to exactly locate, as a challenge for all of us lol.
Like yeah this isn't exciting terrain but it is harder than most "find our location" blogs.
I also love how wide open the Great Plains in Kansas look. Maybe its because I've lived my whole life in the forested hills and lakes of Michigan, but I've always found the vast openness of the plains to be really beautiful and inspiring. I love all kinds of biomes and geography, but there's something so amazing about seeing nothing but plains for miles and miles in any direction. I totally get its not for everybody, and I doubt I'd romanticize it as much if I lived there, but I am excited to get to drive across the plains on I-70, which has got to be the most geographically diverse highway in America, or at least close to it (maybe I-80 is the only freeway with more varied scenery)

@oldmanclippy It's still pretty far from the mountains at that point. It's the Flint Hills that give it the elevation, mainly. It's also not too prominent of a high point overall; north of Kansas City, the highway is generally around 1000 ft on average, just by eyeballing it. The highest point north of Kansas City is Thompson Hill (~1325 ft) near Duluth.
@gaillard, yeah, the air's pretty thin. It's always snowing, and there aren't any mutants, but there are yetis.

Furthermore, I consider that I-80 across Nevada must be redone next.

At an elevation of 1500 ft i wouldn't say the air is pretty thin though. Maybe double the height and it starts to become noticeable.
Re: Kansas Discussion Thread
The elevation of Denver is 5,276 ft (see USGS). So 1,500 ft isn't that high
But if you compare it to the rest of KS it's noticeable for sure.

Being from densely built up England I completely agree with this, love the big open spaces with view for miles and miles. Would be even better with a thunderstorm rolling across the plains!Gormanbros wrote: ↑10 May 2023 23:04

The pics in this blog may not be 'exciting' but I think they look great and really capture the vibe of Kansas/the midwest.

Did anyone notice in pic 3 that there are several International LTs parked at the truck stop? Do we think SCS is finally is adding to the truck stop diversity?
