Have you checked auxiliary light options, they may have been reset, press F4 to check if the slider for it is to the left or right, where right is brighter.

they're aware of this? good, i have the same problem, and its not just this truck in particular, there are other trucks with this same issue, same goes to ATS, the backlight LEDs should have the same brightness as the LED warning indicators (low fuel, check engine, parking engaged, etc).

In some trucks like 2009 Volvo, the gauges do not seem to affected by light settings, but you're right that for the 2016 Volvo, Scanias, etc maxing dashboard light makes a massive improvement.

Same for me. I feel like all interiors became darker, for me, 2009 Volvo is probably the most affected; Renault T feels a bit uncomfortable as well, but not as much.

Upd. I just tried the newer Volvo, and while the speed gauge on the dashboard is well visible, the arrow is very dim.

Just a wee *bump*...

The problem is still present in 1.40.1.0s

Both the speedo and the rev counter needle pointers are still there - just very dim during daylight hours.

They're perfectly visible during dawn, dusk and night tine.

I am using mods like the mini mirror mod as shown in the screenshot, but it doesn't make any difference if mods are present or not.

It's to do with the new lighting effects SCS has implemented into the game. If you don't like it, disable SSAO in the graphic settings.
