Do i need blender 2.8+ to start modding?

#1 Post by JoeAlex23 » 19 Apr 2022 01:59

It might be a dumb question, but do i need blender 2.8+ to start messing with 3d models for the latest version (1.43+) of ETS2 and ATS?

My PC doesn't support anything newer than Blender 2.79 and i wonder if i can still use it.

To be honest, I didn't know Blender had some system requirements :?
2.79 is a rather old Blender revision, it still uses 1.x build for Blender tools (which is over 3 years old), as such the models made with it may not be fully compatible with latest game version addons (advanced lighting, etc...)
You also probably won't be able to edit existing trucks with it, since a lot of materials won't display properly and you won't be able to export them properly either.
You should still be able to make small accessories, like bullbars, roof bars, etc... (assuming they won't be paintable)
The smallest details always make the biggest difference.

as an alternative, you can cough up some money and get ZModeler :)
If you suck at playing the trumpet, that's probably why.

no, not really a good alternativ, why should i use a reverse engineered tool if the developers already provide tools that work 100% with everything and have support ?

especially if it is a subscription you buy with it

also, what is missing that 2.8 and above doesnt run, the specs are not outrageous for it, minimal for 3.0 is what is recommended for 2.79

@Wolfi Yeah, after the massive change from Blender 2.7 to 2.8 they made a requirement to have a dedicated GPU to work properly. But i see how it is, i will give 2.79 a try and see what i can do with it, at much i want to fix some small things that annoy me to no end on some mods (if possible of course) but i won't attempt to create anything new like a truck or a trailer 😂

@xXCARL1992Xx Exactly! Blender is already free and there are thousands of tutorials on how to use it, wasting money on a subscription is absurd.

Have you tried running Blender through Steam? It behaves slightly different to the regular one.
Try getting a 2.92 beta from Steam and check if it will run for you, it may save you a lot of frustration.

I don't know if it might be useful for you, I'll give you the link to download all the Blender versions (32/64 Bit).

Noup, doesn't work, it doesn't even open 😂

But it's fine, i managed to successfully import and export the chassis of a trailer mod that i wanted to fix the position of the wheels with blender 2.79 and it worked perfectly and didn't mess any textures or materials, i don't expect to work with everything but i'll keep trying, but thanks for telling me what to expect 😜

@fabbromix Thank you, but i've already tried all the older versions, only works up to 2.79b on my PC.
