Even my Unreal Engine teacher would be scared on how often people talk about Unreal Engine in this forum

(and still hopeful the city will feature in the game with a garage someday)

What xXCARL1992Xx explains is partially fault of the very companies that own those proprietary engines different from UE. As they were conceived to be used only internally and the AAA releases using them had strong release time limits and insane crunching sessions; nobody care a heck into do a proper cleansing, standardization and in depth documentation of the code. Later, when lots of old staff had left the company due the past crunching and new ones want to reuse old code for a new project, they find they have no freaking idea WTH they have in their hands; what leads to more time lost in the project, more deadlines, more crunching... Due things like that, and as far as I know, developing with Frostbite is the more painful thing you can desire to your worse enemy. No wonder so many companies reach the point they rather switch to an engine that has been build with re-usability in mind instead of dumping more money on re-discover the wheel every time they lose some key programmers due burn-out.

Most people here just don't have any idea at all of what implies to change the graphic engine being used. Or how advantageous is for SCS to have their own one, absolutely controlled and kept well oiled for more than 15 years. Most people just see fancy graphics on other games, see the label of "Unreal engine" and think that with a clap of their hands the change can be done and the same results will be achieved. Absolutely nonsense.

Changing engine will probably cost the same amount of money as to set Prism3D on par with latest innovations
Imo the choice is quite easy

And even if it would cost less; it will require them to stop developing anything on Prism to get focused into the engine migration (otherwise the migration would delay forever). There was a recent rant on the off-topic threads because a few people could not wait a few months without their dose of new stuff. But then the same kind of people ask for that kind of changes that could take years to be completed.

The choice isn't just easy; it's blatantly obvious.

PS: Pavel streaming for the 10th anniversary, and just to mock me hard: "We announce the change to UE5..."

It will NOT cost the same, you will have to invest on training current employees to work with UE and in hiring new people (which you will have to convince with a VERY good salary and incentives) that know how to properly use it and adapt your whole pipeline of work to the new game engine.

Also, another mayor cost is that you have to pay royalties to Epic Games for using UE, SCS doesn't have to pay absolutely anything to keep using their Prism3D and they can do and add whatever they want to it, sure, they will still need to hire new people that know how to do the things they want to add, but that won't be as expensive as hiring certified UE "experts".

they have to pay yearly per developer/seat (so for every dev that activly work on the game) and then 5% iirc if you go over 1 million in revenue with the game, ofc custom licensing exists but i doubt there would be much change and 1500$ per dev per year is already clear that keeping Prism3D is way cheaper

Exactly, most people just see "uhh! fancy looking engine! i want that on every game!" but they have NO idea how much it costs to keep up with everything you have to pay to Epic Games 😂 I'm sure AAA developers get some kind of deal that works out great for everyone, but small studios have to pay what Epic Games says.

Oh, no, some people just go online and talk about things they have no clue about? How could this happen…
I have approximate knowledge of many things

Just chatting how unrealistic a change is (pun intended)
