German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
I hope minor roads between Magdeburg-Hamburg and Magdeburg-Rostock will be interesting since they one of the very few routes in Germany without the highway connection
Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
I agree with oldmanclippy, regarding 6/13.
All the way from, well, east of Travemünde, to.. somewhere east of Rostock? Maybe a remote depot in the island of Rügen?
And the south of it, A20? Maybe these not with 1.48, but maybe in the future?
I do think that there is space for A20, east of Rostock, to A11. And a smaller road, north of it.
What if, we get quite a bit of B105?ninjawarrior1x3 wrote: ↑12 May 2023 17:02 Now I'm starting to wonder if the road to the east of Rostock could get replaced by the rest of the A20. I suspect they won't because they haven't replaced the minor road between Nuremburg and Erfurt with the A73 in 1.47.

I don't quite understand why you would want Esposizione Universale Roma.velles wrote: ↑12 May 2023 17:10 @Aziz
Yeah, I know that tourism isn't the focus of ETS2 but "truck accessible areas only" approach produced some of the most landmarkless cities in the game like Rome.
Obviously I never intended to drive a truck into St. Peter's Square, but Rome proper had not a single landmark in sight, not even EUR district

NTM's B-Double Telescopic Skeletal Container Carrier. Youtube video on how it works. W & S thread.
B-Double trailer and short modes: EN 7.82 swap body, 20’ or 30’ containers.
Standalone 40' mode: EN 7.82 swap body, 20', 30', 40' or 2 x 20' trailer.

Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
As an example of a landmark that could've been in the game - currently Rome is devoid of any landmarks. But that is slightly offtopic, Rome was only an example of certain design philosophy that (while might have been accurate) wasn't very exciting.
Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Getting the balance between industry and landmarks can be tricky. Sadly, not every city is Manchester. I think the current design philosophy of trying to include a route through the city while also adding in some small industry parks on the edges strikes a good balance of the two. Even Erfurt, which does decide to focus on the industry, still feels quite distinct.
Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Yeah, Erfurt (unlike other cities in recent reworks) includes only truck areas. But it still feels quite distinct indeed. I like that they did almost 1:1 recreation of the Moskauer Platz district (you can compare it with Google Maps).
I think that SCS finally managed to find the right balance and Travemunde & Rostock reworks only confirm this - the new cities feel really interesting. Two years ago I was pretty worried about the quality of German rework because only highways were changed and even few cities that were redone from scratch (like Frankfurt, Leipzig or Dresden) didn't feel on par with DLC areas. These new cities on the other hand in some cases exceed many DLC areas.

Not just many; these are the best city mapping we have seen in a while. The post-Iberia cities are excellent in general in terms of striking a balance. One clear thing is that all cities don't follow the same mapping rules, which is good, IMO.
Speaking of Germany, I wish they also worked on the backroads. The autobahns are at an acceptable quality level. Narrow roads need some life.

Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Most of these minor roads should be replaced with autobahns anyway - the ones north of Nurnberg with A70 and A73, Magdeburg-Lipsk with A14 and Dortmund Kassel with A44.
Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Germany is a very Autobahn-heavy nation, so the fact that for accuracy most of the minor roads should be upgraded to that at some point. I still think there are some valuable minor road routes that could be reworked however: Kiel to Travemunde of course, then the Hamburg - Travemunde - Magdeburg triangle, Frankfurt to the Czech Republic, Munich to the Czech Republic beyond the A3, and that direct Mannheim to Munich road could all remain as minor roads for at least part of their lengths.
As a side note, I will be a tiny bit sad that Germany won't get Lubeck. It's not really a must-include, but it's still a place I feel you could fit in one or two industries as a minor city. I will also say that I hope in the long term we get the Fehmarn Belt ferry and eventually tunnel.

Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
On the other hand, motorways only is something I've heard Iberia owners were complaining about. What's needed is a good balance between those and local roads. And there are some gaps in the map that could be reasonably filled with minor roads.
But since cities are most likely the last part of Germany rework effort, I wouldn't count on any big additions or changes unless they're around cities.

Re: German Cities Rework Discussion (Post-Austria)
Minor roads were barely altered during the highway rework phase and they need rework just as badly as the cities.
