American tachograph

#1 Post by klopps » 19 Jun 2022 17:19

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know how tachographs work in the US, or if they even have them?

@klopps They are more known as ELD (Electronic Logging Device) in the United States. There are several solutions used in the industry. Devices are usually connected to the truck's diagnostic port and report data to a mobile device with a specialized app installed.

It's come a long way from the card inserted into the back of the tachograph.
If you suck at playing the trumpet, that's probably why.

So there's not really a standard for what can be used and how, it's entirely up to the operators how they choose to?

There is a standard in term of data, but not in term of hardware.

It's goal is to replace the old paper driver logs

Wait you still use paper over there? In Europe we already digitalized all tachographs by may of 2006, at least on all trucks registered after that point.

We were not even using paper tachograph, but paper handwritten logs

Here is an exemple of a daily log a driver had to fill (and still have to fill for older trucks not compatible with ELD)

Europe is generation ahead of the United States in terms of government regulations enforcing technology utilization for safety on the roads.

I wouldn't call Euro ELDs all that impressive, it's just a receipt printer with a card slot. Plenty of North American tablet setups are miles ahead.

The point is that EU has enforced those ELD over a decade ago while the United States still give the private business a choice to use paper or digital.
