Shift down hint, does it work?

Hello!
How does shift down work in the game?
Should it not work like the shift up hint?

When I use the shift down hint, then the gear goes to N (it does not drop one gear, it goes to N directly)
Anyone else got that problem?
And can it be fixed?

Shift up hint works fine and good.

It seems that not many people use this functionality. For me it works: I have shift hint up assigned to "shift" and shift hint down to "ctrl". With that I can control the shifts in the game. Certainly during engine braking it is nice to be able to hint the auto shift logic to shift down a gear. That increases the engine braking power.

I had this work on one profile then not on a second. So I tested each setting difference one by one and found the conflicting setting.

With "simple automatic" Shift Down Hint works just fine.
When I use "real automatic" then Shift Hint Down goes to N.

Which makes me quite sad, as I was really looking forward to using real automatic when backing up, since my brain thinks brake is brake even in reverse (keyboard player only).

So I fiddled with this more, and found the following in key binds: it doesn't unbind the left Shift/CTRL from Shift Up/Down, even though you also now have it assigned to Shift HINT Up/Down.

So with "real automatic":
Left Shift does bot a hint and shift: so Up and stay in Drive
Left CTRL though does a shift down then a shift to Reverse, which is what sends you to Neutral

This may be a keyboard player only issue?
