In reality, there was never a grid under the grill. There is only a hole.

It is a simplified version of what there is is there. It isn't just a hole, there's actually a grid in that hole.

We've got photo references.

well, there is a hole, what you see is the radiator that we dont see ingame at all, the top grill has a mesh in front of the radiator

pause the video at this moment and you see a perforated sheet in front of the radiator
