Controller Setup / Modifying Buttons / Key Bindings etc ?

#1 Post by Petdevils » 16 Apr 2023 18:30

Hello

Can you please tell me, or point me to the most up to date, helpful, clear instructions on how to setup a Microsoft XBOX 360 Controller for PC - to use with ETS2.

It could be just writing instructions here, or pointing me to links to the best video, website, image/diagram etc.

Ideally, I'd like to try to use the Controller only (or at least most the time when driving - and maybe Keyboard/Mouse if easier/needed for between driving bits)

I have looked online but there's stuff from long ago; and it's a jumbly mess for someone like me who is really very new to using a controller (especially on PC).

I've done the basic wizard setup on ETS2, but that didn't show me how to change what buttons does what etc?

Is the only way to do it - to manually add Controller buttons to the main keyboard/mouse key binding list - where it gives you two alternate binding options for each task?

What are the best Binding lists (ideally for Xbox 360 Controller only / and secondly - Xbox 360 Controller and some keyboard/mouse when needed) - please post them.

I remember the controller wizard said something about changing/enabling 'General Controller Settings' in the Steam Settings.
I had a look at it - but I'm really not sure what it is suggesting I set it to do.
So I've left that alone for now - until you guys can explain it to me?

I ran into a really annoying problem when I first tried to setup the Controller.

On the Controls screen, I selected Keyboard/Mouse and some Control input...

But when I gave up and came here to write this, after I posted this - I unplugged the Controller and went back into ETS2 and found it has screwed up half my key bindings for the Keyboard/Mouse.
Is there anyway I can prevent this from happening? It seemed to reset half of it to default settings (But not camera view bindings I had changed)?
Is there also a way to backup the bindings to easily put them back?

How do I set it up so that it leaves my custom Keyboard/Mouse bindings alone (assuming I put them in the 1st column of key binding alternatives) but allows me to plug in a Controller when I do want to - without having to change the Controls settings and or risk losing half my bindings every time etc?

I have come across ReWASD - sounds like using that with a controller with its shift mode to have multiple binding sets - might make ETS2 more manageable, or less painful ?

However, I'm not sure if it's if's a good idea trying to use that with ETS2 - does it play nicely together?
Or is there something better?

Incidentally - just curious if things like ReWASD - with multi binding sets usually work well on most modern PC Games?

I've only recently started trying this controller with PC Games; and noticed some Games have some insanely detailed controller settings where they really get down into crazy degrees of minutiae.
Do people often change things like Stick sensitivity for movement and camera etc or should you always leave it alone?

What are some more detailed controller settings I should keep in mind; that might be worthwhile changing for this and other games (all types) ?

Any other general advice on using an Xbox 360 Controller in PC Games (for a relative noob) - would be greatly appreciated.

Might be worth making a sticky later if we get enough helpful info - so people aren't quite as unsure of what to do as I am when they arrive at this point.

Thank you for your help.
