New Volvo VNL engine sound

#1 Post by Harven » 31 May 2023 17:25

Hi,
I want to conduct a small experiment here. For now, I will not explain the reason I'm doing it because I don't want your opinion to be biased.
I recorded two videos showing the engine sounds of the new Volvo VNL. These sounds are made using the same recordings but they are different in other aspects. I would like you to watch these videos and then vote on which one sounds better/more realistic in your opinion. I suggest watching them in fullscreen to better see the tachometer needle and gear shifting (I shifted manually). I would also much appreciate if you could explain your choice. I will clarify everything in due time. Thanks :)

The sound in video 1 sounds more convincing to me. The second video? Somehow it doesn't flow so to say. It also sounds it has like 2 engines at once (video 2) .

The first video sounds better to me. The tone of the sound changes better as rpm's change, to me it matches the rpm's much better as engine speed increases and decreases.

2nd video to me sounds more like the new stock sound for the VNL. The tones of the engine really don't change a lot when the engine speed increases or decreases. Not as much as the first. The second video I also hear what I call loping both as you idle and raise the speed and driving and reach certain rpm's. To explain better when the 2nd video reaches about 13 or 14 rpm you can hear the sound kind of breaking apart at the very beginning of the video and you are just sitting still. I hear it also in different spots as you were driving. I don't know how to explain it better, sorry.

The 1st video sounds better to me. In the 2nd video the sound is a bit strange when driving the truck with the rpm around 1500, I'm not sure how to describe it, as if sounds reverberates too much.

The 1st one sounds so much better and more natural, it sounds smooth when you change gears.

The 2nd one in some parts sounds like there are 2 sounds overlapping over each other and doesn't sound smooth when you change gears like most of the stock SCS sounds since the FMOD update.

Well this is intriguing. :) Because the sound is showcased exclusively in the truck cabin I can only judge based on that, and I presume it is about the sound from within the cabin.

1st video sounds more natural to me.

2nd video, listen closely to 1700 RPM to 1800 RPM from 0:24 to 0:28. It resonates like it's a different engine
