[Abandoned] Cervellotica Physics + Tyre Spring Delete

Forum rules
SCS as a company do not wish to have paid mods on this forum. While we understand that not all paid mods use the Intellectual Property of other companies/people, it is very hard to moderate what is and isn't acceptable when money is involved. There are also concerns that it could look unfavorable to potential work partners going forward if SCS allow mods that may potentially use unlicensed branding.
Posting in the Mods forum (ATS and ETS2) is restricted to sharing free-to-the-public mods and providing support for mods. For more details, please check the Forum Rules.

[Abandoned] Cervellotica Physics + Tyre Spring Delete

#1 Post by fratrac » 28 Sep 2023 18:19

Personal physics mod project, thought it could be worth sharing; it's unlocked, I've added many (hopefully useful) comments to the physics.scs file and recommend playing with it

How to enable in-game developer console: viewtopic.php?t=61852

Setup Complete & 4air versions only (updated for new 1.48 sliders; mod manager description updated too)
  • MANDATORY 4air version only: console command "g_cabin_suspension_stiffness -2.6" (cabin suspension stiffness slider < 0)
you MUST issue this command into the console BEFORE going to your truck; you can safely do that from your profile's main menu. If this command is issued before enabling the mod, you shouldn't encounter issues apart from the cab behaving a little funny. Adjusting the cabin suspension stiffness slider will override the value previously specified through the console (do so when uninstalling Cervellotica)!
  • Truck suspension stiffness 0%, truck stability 0%, trailer stability 0% (adjust all to taste)
  • Console command "g_brake_intensity 1.0" or braking intensity slider 100% (adjust to taste)
  • gamepad users only Steering autocentering enabled, steering sensitivity 0.50, steering non-linearity 0.00, steering animation 1900°;
keyboard users should set steering sensitivity at roughly 0.30, then adjust to their liking (non-zero steering non-linearity should help too)
adjust steering sensitivity to taste and truck length
  • Interior camera horizontal lock > 100% recommended, enabled physical camera movement recommended

Features
  • Tyre spring delete: increased longitudinal tyre stiffness (likely modeled by a spring+damper between the truck and the tyre contact patch) for better brakes and accelerator control & more realistic suspension reaction to gear shifting, driveshaft torque, accelerating/stopping & better manual clutch feel
  • Gamepad steering sensitivity and autocentering
  • Reduced fifth wheel roll allowance for visual coherence with gameplay
  • Torque converter viscosity (kinda)
  • Tweaked lateral tyre stiffness (probably)
  • Tyre slip factors
  • 4air version only 4 point cabin suspension (4air) instead of 2 point suspension (hinge2air) for SCS trucks that already have it
Truck compatibility limited for 4air version only
- any truck without cabin suspension (no effect)
- SCS Freightliner Cascadia
- SCS International LoneStar
- SCS International LT
- SCS Kenworth T680 2022
- SCS Kenworth W900
- SCS Mack Anthem
- SCS Mack Pinnacle
- SCS Volvo VNL 2018
- SCS Western Star 49X
- else, change cabin suspension type in def/vehicle/truck/your_truck/cabin/your_cabin from "air2hinge" to "4air"

Known issues updated 2024\01\27
  • complete version Sometimes when hitting a sharp bump (rail crossing, etc) the cabin physical camera might not move smoothly, though it doesn't seem to cause other issues
  • Sometimes auto transmission will get stuck upshifting/downshifting between the same two gears
  • Engine torque application is too rough because the tyre spring delete exposes other limitations

Paste the .zip archive in your Documents\ATS\mod folder and enable it in Mod Manager. Any feedback is always welcome
Feel free to add the tyre spring delete to your favourite physics mod, this game deserves it

FInally! That is the only realistic physics mod to be ever made for ETS2/ATS. And it also is the simplest one.
Now taking off with clutch feels as it should and I'm able to use the same gear as should be used in real life (4L without a trailer, 2L with a light load and 1L with an heavy load). Braking is radically improved as well: if you stomp on the brakes at low speed the truck stops on a dime as it should. Driving with all the suspension stiffness sliders and brake intensity to minimum feels very believable now.
I've always felt that there was somwthing very wrong with ETS2/ATS physics, for example compared to the very good physics of OMSI bus simulator: the truck response always seemed to be somewhat delayed with respect to accelerator and brake input. Now this is finally solved!
Thanks a lot!

Not even close of being good, compared with Tiger's mod for instance where you feel the weight of both the truck and the trailer, the inertia and centrifugal force in a corner if approached too fast, this mod is just slightly better than what SCS is giving us by default.

@lamanorbu Really happy to hear that :D that's what has always bothered me too, it took me a while to understand what the problem actually was lol

@Watermark thanks, that's exactly what it's meant to be :) you can add the tyre stiffness fix to any other existing physics mod if you like what it does. Unfortunately I haven't figured out a way to make Cervellotica an addon yet

rsr wrote: 14 Apr 2024 19:49 This has nothing to do with the topic or what you said, but I saw you descripstion about bristle stiffness. What do you use on your settings for suspension stiffness?
Sorry if I bring you here but it's more on topic like so :)
I have all the suspension sliders at the softest setting. Unfortunately I haven't been able to change the other suspension parameters in physics.scs with good results yet. I have increased damping_scaling_front_factor to 1.5 because the trucks felt really woblly for some reason (for ETS2 you can take a look at the same topic as this in the ETS2 forum)
