Deeze's ATS Travels

#1 Post by oldeezel » 18 Nov 2023 10:19

I just arrived in ATS after a couple of years dithering around in ETS2. I have downloaded the ATS demo a couple of times but never gotten far, but Steam had a special price going on the base game so I took the plunge and here I am, and so far loving it!

Day 1: after a couple of quick jobs and a $50k loan form a very gullible bank manager, here is...

... my own truck, for just on $60k!! Okay, it's old and underpowered, but it's in good condition and I'm pretty sure I can pick up a new motor and gearbox in the next couple of weeks!! The old cab-over Kenny was cheap, but it was always going to be one of those beasts anyway. I live in south-east Australia, roughly half way between Melbourne and Sydney and my work takes me onto the main highway on a daily basis and cab-over Kenworths directly derived form this truck are the single most common truck I see. There are hundreds of them - maybe thousands - doing the 12 hour Melb-Sydney run day after day. European trucks probably outnumber American ones, but the Euro trucks are split between half a dozen brands (Volvo, Merc and Scania predominating) but of the American trucks the cab-over Kenny is by far the most common. So this is my ATS truck, albeit with the Aus version of the cab steps and the Aus tail lights.

Day 2: A couple more jobs using my own truck, take a $100k loan, pay back the balance of the original $50K loan and still have more than enough left for...

...my own trailer. In the spirit of keeping with the retro look it's an old Fruehauf fridge, but it will carry whatever is on offer just as well as a more modern trailer, and again, comparably cheap and imho a fine looking combo!!

The question now is whether to stick with a one truck - one trailer operation or start buying garages? I think the former, but time will tell....

I don't think this ever happened in ETS2, but after a whole week - yep, 7 complete days - I haven't repainted the truck!!!

After playing around with about a hundred colour possibilities, I suddenly remembered that Google knows everything, so I did a search for 'three colour combinations' and down below all the woosy pastels intended for web design or bathroom repaints, I found this dark green (almost black), bright orange, and beige combo and I really like it...

The container skel is owned and imho looks great in the orange (the container colour was sheer luck - thank you @Arnook) lol !!

Back with the Aerodyne sleeper and with a longer chassis variation as I level up, with another owned trailer - this one looking better in the greenish black...

Visiting Mexico on the REFORMA map - a truly beautiful bit of work!!

That trailer dolly annoys me a bit lol - looks like it's the same frame as the three-axle variant with the front axle omitted, which leaves it about 10' longer than it needs to be, and the fifth wheel too far forward. I had the option of the three-axle variant, but since the load probably doesn't need a dolly at all I went with the 'smaller' version. Oops....

Managed to build an almost Australian-looking day-cab logger, and despite the Mexican road sign, it still manages to look just about right - and I see lots of loggers hauling machinery so the load is not entirely inappropriate ....
