German Truck Simulator turns 15

#1 Post by automaton » 13 Jan 2025 20:01

On this day in 2010, German Truck Simulator was released. The game introduced many of the mechanics, trucks, maps, and even some songs used in Euro Truck Simulator 2 and, to a lesser extent, American Truck Simulator, to this very day. SCS will likely never mention it as it was never published by them, but hey.

Some firsts this game introduced:
  1. MAN TGX: To my knowledge, this is the first officially licensed truck in Truck Simulator history. The current model is still used in Euro Truck Simulator 2 to this very day.
  2. Company management: GTS (re)introduced company management, which was present in 18 Wheels of Steel but notably absent from Euro Truck Simulator 1. You can buy garages, hire drivers, and trucks for them. This feature remains a staple in modern Truck Simulator titles.
  3. Larger map scale: GTS adopts a 1:19 map scale, much larger than that of ETS1; while GTS only covered Germany and later Austria, it was considerably larger and denser than ETS1's implementations thereof. GTS's map was used in ETS2 until quite recently.
UPD 4/15/2025: fixed typo
