SCS Official Discord

#1 Post by Martin_V » 11 Apr 2025 18:01

It baffles me why scs hasn't got an official Discord server when it's a HUGE platform for gamers and most Game Devs are on it (from games i play anyway). Also when you see how many members are in related servers like TruckersMP, and Promods, it shows just how many people who play this game use discord.

If you Vote No, i am interested why you voted No?

Discord is a lot of headache to manage, especially on the scale that SCS would be.

I thought discord was easier to manage than a forum (although I'm not saying that they should remove the forum). There's also plenty of discord servers with millions of users that work fine, and an SCS discord wouldn't be as big as that.

@Dragolago Regardless of the size, someone needs to maintain and run the server and SCS don't appear to be interested in doing so.

I think it would be a great addition. I would even be up for helping get it up and keeping it running. But, correct, on the frame it would be massive.

In addition to the basic management headache (of simple online trolls, soon to be amplified by LLM "ai"), to the OP and advocates, do you know who owns discord (or care)?
Do you know where the discord data goes, where it is stored, and how it is used?

I have some ideas, and as an IT professional with decades of experience I am 100% certain that is not a good place for me (and privacy conscious individuals) to be. Yes I have tried discord in the past, and have also observed it follow the ens@#$%&.on path many online places have, where greed and quick rewards are priority. Yes there are large masses of people that use discord and many other online media sites (which I also avoid). Yes it can have some conveniences. But there are far greater negatives than its sweet "candy cigarettes" benefits.

This forum may not have the fancy bells and whistles, but I know and trust who is running it -- @SCS. That's why I visit and occasionally participate here.
We're venturing outside of trucking territory (and flirting with lock-land). Not sure how to educate the massss (maybe visit fsf.org and gnu.org), but wish people would step away from shiny objects and look at history (and present) to recognize the value of individual-privacy, technical-transparency, and trust.
