[1.59] multiple problems on Linux (possible memory leak, broken rain and HDR)

#1 Post by Muckelchen » 25 May 2026 12:25

Hello,

I am currently playing ETS 2 1.59 on Linux. However I am experiencing multiple technical problems.

- possible memory leak:
after a while the framerate drops massively from about 100-150 FPS depending on the area to only 10-20 forcing me to restart the game. This happens randomly. The ressource usage (CPU, GPU, RAM etc.) remains the same.

- broken rain:
when it rains the rain is flickering all over the windscreen. This is really annoying

- broken HDR:
the option the activate HDR is greyed out even with HDR enabled in my desktop enviorment. However this looks like a known bug since 1.57.

I play in 1440p with the highest possible settings. I disabled all of my mods for testing. All these issues do not happen when I use the Windows port with Proton. However the game does not recognise all of my input devices correctly, making it impossible to play with my SimRig so using the Linux port is my only option.

My system:
OS: Fedora Workstation 44
DE: KDE Plasma 6.6.5
graphics driver: Wayland
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
VRAM: 20 GB

Does someone have an idea on how to fix these issues?
Thank you and have a good day!

The game is using the OpenGL renderer, not DirectX.

Steam > Euro Truck Simulator 2 > right click > Properties > Select "Launch with DirectX11 64bit" However I am on Windows and do not much at all about Linux and its capabilities.

Also you seem to be starting the game with extremely little RAM:

00:00:00.000 : [mem] physical total: 31174M
00:00:00.000 : [mem] physical avail: 325M

Hi Digital X,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunetly DirectX is not available on Linux since it is Windows-only.

Regarding the RAM usage, I took a quick test drive in a city and RAM usage peaked at around 3.1 GiB. I don't know if this is normal RAM usage for ETS 2, I never paid much attention to it.

3.1GB RAM usage is very low.

Have you tried running it under Vulkan instead of OpenGL?
It's BETA and not currently supported, but might help.

If you want to give it a try, just add

Code: Select all

-rdevice vk
to the startup options.

I never played the game before the interface was changed in 1.58, and don't know what all the fuss is about.

Note that vulkan is still experimental and not supported.
It may work, or it may crash your game.

I've been running Vulkan for 2-3 months now, and apart from one weird graphical glitch with the northern lights and a couple of incompatible mods, it's worked flawlessly for me.
Given that the OP has to restart the game regularly, it might be worth at least trying it.

Definitely worth trying, just noting that there can be downsides.

Unfortunately using Vulkan completely breaks my visuals. Everything is blurry and distorted, as if the game runs in a wrong resolution and aspect ratio.

Since I'm facing the same flickering rain issue (on Nobara Linux 43 with and AMD RX 9060 XT) I tried switching to Vulcan as well. I also had the same issue with wrong resolution and aspect ratio, however, I switched off Fullscreen mode and then enabled it again and then the resolution is correct (but I need to this every time the game starts). However, when I try to continue my career the game crashes, probably because 1 or more of my Mods don't play nice with the Vulcan version yet.

Also tried it in a new Career without any Mods. I tested the rain there and it's no longer glitching!

So there seems to be hope ;)

Edit: when I disable the Realistic Rain v5.2.1 Mod and Ultimate Graphics Mod v1.58.1.1000s the gamen loads and works well under Vulkan.
