I have the same positive experience as grantalope. However we both are 'just' running an HP Reverb G2, which has a much lower resolution than your Pimax 8K X. Your cpu frame time has improved noticeably. The RTX3080 has now become your bottleneck it seems.
System specs: Ryzen 5800X3D, RTX3080 (no OC), Varjo Aero (using OpenXR through OpenComposite instead of SteamVR), 32 GB DDR3200, Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB, Win10. And most importantly: vanilla game, no mods.

Turn down the resolution/visual settings a bit? Should give you a sense of how far you are from running at native. You are running twice as many pixels as the G2 and we are already at ~95% usage for a 3080 at G2 resolution. Seems like you are going to need both a next gen gpu and the x3d to run that.

I also just upgraded basically most of my system and kinda feel disappointed as I don’t really “feel” the improvements based on what expectations I had :D

Went from 3080 FE, 5600X, 2x16gb 3200mhz CL14 to 3080ti, 5800x3d and 2x16gb 3600mhz CL14 and on G2, I do feel the improvements, but I cant really justify the upgrade value (roughly 800-1000 EUR if I manage to sell old parts).

Can you share what performance/VR settings are you using? And perhaps a tool or a way to measure it?

I've been running everything at max except dsao which is at medium. No resolution scaling. Forced reprojection off. Getting mainly 90 fps with very occasional dips in cities or at night in both ATS and ProMods ETS2. FPSVR is what I use to judge performance and response timings.

Also, I'm running the OpenXR mod (version 0.6.3). It translates OpenVR calls to OpenXR, directly to WMR bypassing SteamVR, which gave me quite an uplift in performance. Check a few pages back. Combined with the 5800X3D, I can now finally run at 90 fps most of the time and say goodbye to reprojection :)

Yesterday afternoon, I went back to my 5600X:

I had a closer look at my fpsVR logfiles and discovered, that two days ago I just opened "wrong" 5600X files for comparison coincidentally.
Here are some better ones of the 5600X in the course of the last year, both from ATS and ETS2:

2nd May, 35 minutes, ETS2:
Delivered fps: 57.9

CPU frametime:
Median: 8.6 ms
99th percentile: 16.4 ms
99.9th percentile: 20.2 ms
frametime <13.3ms(vsync): 88.5%
1st May, 68 minutes, ATS:
Delivered fps: 51.35

CPU frametime:
Median: 13.6 ms
99th percentile: 22.2 ms
99.9th percentile: 25.6 ms
frametime <13.3ms(vsync): 48.2%
5th August 2021, 44 minutes, ETS2:
Delivered fps: 69.57

CPU frametime:
Median: 11.4 ms
99th percentile: 19.4 ms
99.9th percentile: 21.8 ms
frametime <13.3ms(vsync): 71.8%
7th April 2021, 70 minutes, ATS:
Delivered fps: 63.98

CPU frametime:
Median: 12 ms
99th percentile: 19.5 ms
99.9th percentile: 22.8 ms
frametime <13.3ms(vsync): 64.8%
Of course, there are also more of the worse ones.
But it seems it is mainly related to the region I am driving through: Cities and urban agglomerations are generally much lower and worse, rural areas generally higher and better (especially desert and steppe).
Here's the result of a session yesterday evening after rollback to the 5600X, driving first within Grangeville and then from Grangeville to Colville, 54 minutes:
CPU frametime:
Median: 11.8 ms
99th percentile: 27.1 ms
99.9th percentile: >30 ms
frametime <13.3ms(vsync): 60%
Of course, the more noticeable load-to-RAM stutters are back-
But concerning frametimes and FPS in general, the 5800X 3D doesn't seem to be a major upgrade compared to the 5600X. At least in my case with the Pimax 8K-X => completely bottlenecked by the GPU I suppose.

What would and could help me, are fholger's openvr.dll mods - but unfortunately, only openvr_fsr (https://github.com/fholger/openvr_fsr/r ... fsr_v2.1.1) is working properly - but makes overall image quality quite blurry and much worse in my eyes.
openvr_foveated (https://github.com/fholger/openvr_foveated) seems to hook according to the log file - but it is not working ingame.
Nevertheless, foveated rendering is generally working with my Pimax if I activate it in PiTool and launch the truck sim's in Oculus mode instead of OpenVR mode (but no FPS gain; else I'd not be complaining ;)) - so the issue that openvr_foveated isn't working properly, seems not to be related neither to the game nor to Pimax/PiTool in general. Unfortunately I was not able to determine the reason yet... 😕

fholger's vrperfkit (https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit) doesn't want to hook at all - at least any more - it once hooked (but didn't have any effect, same as with openvr_foveated) - but since two or three weeks, it not even hooks any more - for whatever reason - I've not been able to determine why neither here, too, no matter what I tried, i.e.:
  • Enable / disable FFR in PiTool
  • Switch different FFR modes in PiTool
  • Switch different VSR modes in openvr_foveated / vrperfkit
  • Rename dxgii.dll to d3d11.dll
  • Tried cedriclmenard's modification (https://github.com/cedriclmenard/vrperfkit)
  • Tried different versions of openvr.dll
  • Disable Steam overlay ingame
    ...
Always no effect...

=>
  • VSR works (but too blurry imho)
  • FFR works with PiTool in Oculus mode (but no FPS gain)
  • FFR not working neither with openvr_foveated nor with vrperfkit
😭

I'd appreciate any further ideas or help in this case :)
Or would it make sense to post this issue on fholger's GitHub?

Today I did another quick 20 min testing for both ATS and ETS and I can clearly see the difference between past performance and current and I know what was the problem.
I had a Mercedes New Actros mod in ETS2 which is very unstable/unoptimized for VR and makes the VR experience really bad (almost every frame is orange in steamvr performance graph, even with my setup).

After trying vanilla trucks, the performance is very stable - all green frames with around 11.11ms frametimes (90fps). I will try later this week to test again with fpsvr to see actual data, but nevertheless I can really notice the difference. I’m using 150% supersampling in steamvr with G2.

So I did another check of ETS2 today with Renault truck and after update to 1.44 version and driving from my garage in Salzburg to Stein Bruch in Salzburg and this is what I got as a result of FPSVR:
Although I can see that actually it is not 90fps, however the experience was still good and I am satisfied with quality/performance.
I was also surprised to see that it was using 11gb of GPU memory which seems super high and close to max what 3080TI can do.

And here is ATS result on version 1.44 and using International 9000 and driving from Jackson to Idaho Falls:
Much better performance than ETS2, however graphics settings in theory should be the same, but I noticed more aliased/more jittering in ATS...also GPU memory usage was around 9.5GB and in either games I disabled all mods.
